Two Comal ISD Students Named National Math Stars

September 25, 2025 - Two third-grade students in Comal ISD have been selected for the National Math Stars (NMS) 2025 cohort. The NMS program provides each student with more than $100,000 in mentorship, enrichment opportunities and resources for the next 10 years or until high school graduation.

“I was excited when I found out that I was selected,” says Trevor Guerrero, whose favorite subject is math. “It feels good to be a part of this.”

Guerrero, who attends Oak Creek Elementary School, and Liam Quade, who attends Mountain Valley Elementary School, are among only 57 students selected for the prestigious opportunity this year.

“Being selected means a lot to me,” says Quade, “because it will help me get into a good college, and math is my favorite subject.”

Both students will take a math class online each semester and attend summer camps of their choosing annually. Additionally, they are assigned a mentor and family adviser to help guide them through the NMS program.

When he’s not mastering mathematical equations, Guerrero enjoys playing on his San Antonio Armadillos lacrosse club team. He is also in the Spanish Immersion and Gifted and Talented programs at OCES.

A collector of calculators, Quade has had an affinity for math since age 2 or younger, easily identifying geometric shapes, intrigued by numbers and always wanting to learn more. He proudly shared that a 72-sided shape is called a heptacontadiagon and explained aleph null.

Quade, who is part of the Gifted and Talented program at MES, is interested in becoming an astronomer one day to determine the distance between stars and planets or becoming a scientist using axolotl DNA to prevent cancer.

Guerrero is interested in either becoming a police officer like his grandfather or learning how to make robots.

Since the program began in 2023, NMS has received thousands of second and third-grade student nominations every year with only a small percentage selected to join. Guerrero and Quade were among students from Comal ISD nominated this year based on their Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) math scores. This is the first year for Comal ISD to participate.

Applicants completed a multi-stage evaluation process that assessed each student’s mathematical aptitude, eagerness for deeper STEM exploration and the program’s potential impact on their futures.
